W.R. Midwinter was founded in 1910 by William Robinson Midwinter in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, becoming one of England’s largest potteries by the late 1930s with over 700 employees. The company revolutionized British tableware, particularly during the 1950s-60s under Roy Midwinter’s leadership, collaborating with renowned designers like Jessie Tait and Terence Conran.
The “Brama” pattern holds special historical significance as wartime production. Manufactured between 1940-1946 under Britain’s Wartime Concentration Scheme, pieces with this pattern represent limited production during material shortages and manufacturing restrictions. The pattern features green ground with gold chintz grapes and grapevine overlay, though some variations show multi-colored flowers on white backgrounds with green rim trim. Production ceased in 1946-1947 when it was substituted by the Springtime pattern, creating a narrow production window that enhances rarity.
Thus piece’s backstamp “BRAMA MIDWINTER ENGLAND STAFFORDSHIRE SEMI-PORCELAIN” dates to the 1920s-1940s period when Midwinter marketed semi-porcelain wares under their “Porcelon” trade name. This marking confirms authenticity and indicates the piece predates Midwinter’s famous modernist revolution of the 1950s.
